We started with a new album from Karen Tweed & Andy Cutting - 10 instrumentals on this nicely presented album. -- Keith Hills will be at the Western Hotel tomorrow night as part of the St. Ives September Festival - as will Black Cat Theory on Friday - and Bob Devereux most of the time. -- See Cyril Tawney at the Sea Stories concert, Plymouth Dome, on Hoe, Saturday. -- I sadly have to tell you that there will be 2 more 'Fish on Folks' and that will be it. The powers that be have pulled the plug on all the specialist music programmes. These pages will remain until I have decided what to do with them. top

The Gasworks Community Choir are based in Bristol. Their CD has 13 tracks. -- Dave Webber & Anni Fentiman are at the Bodmin FC on Friday. -- I would have played a track from Show of Hands & Emily Slade, but I left the CDs at home. I humbly accept a slap on the wrist. They are both at the Eden Project on Saturday. --It was with sadness that I had to announce the death of Danny Mitchell. His funeral will be at Penmount, Friday, at 10:00. It is hoped that there will be some good singing. top

Golowan Festival is in full swing now. visit their website for details. -- Saffron Summerfield is a name that goes way back to the 70s. She recently released a 'best of' but this is the real, up to date Saffron. 9 tracks of, mostly, her own stuff. -- Boys from the Hill, labelled Urban Welsh Folk - helped out by the lovely Julie Murphy on Dark Eyed Sailor - for further info. take a look at their website. -- Shoormal Not a new one but great none-the-less. -- Same goes for Pete Coe. -- For info on Tim Laycock and the New Scorpion Band have a look at the website. -- For Show of Hands see last week. -- Tubular Dogs is a collection of 13 parodies written by Les Barker sung by many notable folkies. top

Jim Reanolds is at the Folk on the Moor tonight. -- Show of Hands are at Polperro Village Hall on Thursday & Friday as part of the Polperro Arts Week. -- Coming from a garage-punk band, James Yorkston has come up a gentle (almost too gentle in places) 10 track CD of his own songs. (apart from 'I Know my Love') He claims folk influences. Both John Peel & John Martyn have shown an interest. top

I was very sad to have to announce the death of Tony Rose. Tony, very much associated with the West Country, (born in Exeter) was a great favourite on the folk scene going right back to the 60s. He was a member of the short lived Bandogs. After he contracted cancer there were many benefit events to get him special treatment that gave him an extra year, in which he appeared at many clubs and festivals, much to the delight of his fans. He is irreplaceable -- Jim Reynolds will be at Folk on the Moor, next Sunday. top

Clive Gregson's new offering is 17 tracks long and includes a couple of insramentals. -- Harry Safari, Larry Law & Mic McCready will, no doubt, be at the Revival 2000 session, St.Michael's Mount Inn, Barrippa, later tonight. -- Castles of Gold is sub-titled 'Songs and Stories of Irish Immigration' - a double CD of stories and songs read by Frank McCourt & Roma Downey and sung by Pan Morigan. -- Tanks for the Memory is also a story - the story of the Dorset village of Tyneham, commandeered for training during the 2nd WW, written by Mick and performed by him & Fieldwork Theatre Co.. -- Mose Fan Fan will be at the Acorn, Penzance, on Thursday. --Julie Murphy's album has 10 traditional sounding songs with a 'modern jazz' tinged backing - powerful stuff. -- Dave & Al Sealey (Cosmotheka) carried the mantle of the songs of the Music Hall to all the major festivals, cubs & concerts throughout the country. They were often to be heard on the radio. 'You Only Have To Ask' is a fitting tribute to Al, who died in 1999. -- Tom & Barbara Brown are firmly rooted in the west country, as are the 16 tracks on their latest offering. top

I was sad to learn of the death of John B. Spencer. -- Nancy Kerr & James Fagan play and sing their way through 15 fine tracks on their new release. -- Show of Hands will be at St. Meubred's Church, Cardinham, and at Port Isaac Pottery. -- A 15 minute video of the Old Folk Cottage, taken from a film made by
the Newquay Film Society in 1967, has been produced. This features the
performance of many of the regulars eg John Sleep, John the Fish, Gerry
Lockran, Henry the Jug, Whispering Mick, & Ralph McTell with background
glimpses of Brenda Wootton & Michael Chapman, & interviews of the public by
David Dearlove,
After many friends expressed an interest in having a copy, we have recently
got permission from Joan Drake (widow of Paul Drake who produced the video)
to get it copied. If you are interested in having a copy give me a shout.

Jigs, Reels & Crack
|
We started this week with a new one from Lindisfarne. 13 tracks, up to the standard we've come to expect from this band, who seem to have been around for ever. -- What do they say about London busses? Not one but two CDs from Jigs, Reels & Crack. -- Harvey Andrews, Pete Atkin, Leon Rosselson, and Kath Tait, along with Alan Clayson, Philip Jeays, Barb Jungr, Des De Moor and Robb Johnson sing two songs each on 9 x 2. -- Jeremy Taylor will be at Folk on the Moor, next Sunday. top

The Eliza Carthy and Nancy Kerr album is made up mainly of previously released tracks - none the less, with 15 tracks, it's a good one. -- Bill Jones will be at Folk on the Moor tonight. -- Colcannon, a lively 5 piece band from Adelaide with 18 covers of old favourites from their previous 4 CDs. -- Vikky Clayton did a sterling job supporting Fairport at Hall for Cornwall. Together they finnished with a magnificent 'Who Knows Where the Time Goes'. 'Stars' has 13 tracks of her own songs. -- Voices on the Verge are/is 4 established young ladies who sing 13 tracks in a diversity of styles and on a range of instruments. Recorded live, there are no tricks here. -- 'Yola' is Eleanor McEvoy's new album. 11 lovely songs written by her, or with others and delivered in a laid back, confident style. The album comes in a posh jewel case and is recorded on 'Hybrid Sterio'. "With 'Super Audio CD' you can feel the artistry of the performer, the ambirnce of the hall, and even the color of the music like never before." ??? -- A new one from the 4 pice, Cape Breton band, Barra MacNeils. 12 tracks - a mixture of songs, instrumentals old & and new. top

The album is dedicated to Henry who died just before it became available to the outside world. -- Hilary Spencer will be at Folk on the Moor, Wotter, tonight. -- TheRobb Johnson track is one of the three he put on a home made CD. -- St. Agnes Fountain the only Christmas album I received this year -- The Purple Gang have also come together after a long lay-off and are looking for bookings. -- Abdul Tee-Jay will be at Falmouth Art Centre on Friday. -- I was sad to have to to announce the death of J.
